Hey guys, James Wright here from Marketing Secrets for Electricians once again and today I want to talk to you about how we're going to start running ads and the process I'm going to go through and hopefully this helps you to see that it's possible but also there's a structure and a reason to the way ads are done and the way people do things in the online marketing world. So here's what I hear a lot. How do normal electricians like us who are properly trained and licensed who are not willing to cheat and take shortcuts and who are wanting to own a successful electrical business? How do we compete against the big guys who own the market share or the guys that charge peanuts for an electrical job? On top of that we want to employ the best electricians so we can get off the tools and have plenty of time for other areas of life.
That's the question. Join me and follow along as we search for the answers. My name is James Rest and welcome to Marketing Secrets for Electricians. What shock means is like with the headline. We want to grab their attention.
We want to shock. What grabs your attention right now? When you're driving around in your van, when you're looking around, what ads, what highway ads, what cars, what is it that grabs your attention? When you stop for lunch and you're scrolling through your Facebook feed, when you're on YouTube, what is it that shocks you? What stops you or even stops?
We could do stops, couldn't we? Shocks. I like shocks. that's more related to electricians, but what stops or shocks you to stop in your tracks and actually investigate more on what that thing is. First is shocks.
The next thing we want to look at is you want to share. You want to share something. For example, the shocking headline might be, "Danger! Danger! Electricity can kill you." Then five reasons why you need to listen to this now.
Then you go into a story. You share a story about what it is that relates to the headlines. The story might be these common things that people don't know that are causing the most fires in your home right now. Then you go through and you share a story where you've had an experience where you rocked up to a job and the switchboard was burnt at crisp. The garage was burnt down.
I myself have run into a few stories that I could share. This is the key. You want to be able to share stories so people can connect with you because if you can't share a story, if you look back through the culture, through our generations, through human history, we're all about sharing stories. We still need to do this today. Please share your story.
What is it that relates to your shocking headline that that story stops them in the track so you can share your story. For example, the shocking headline could be, "The number one thing that kills people in a house fire." What is that thing? That stops them enough. You have a picture as well. I'm not going into pictures so much today, but the picture can be like eyeballs, grabs their attention.
The next thing you're telling a story. For example, I rocked up to a job. It was in the morning. The sun was shining. It was a great day.
I just started getting my tools out. I had a phone call from a fellow electrician who said, "Hey, I'm out an hour away. I've got all my tools out. I can't leave the job." I had a call from another customer and he was like, "I need an electrician here now. Right now, I've got no power.
My house just had a fire last night. He was all panicky and scared." I spoke to the customer I was at and was like, "Look, I've got an emergency situation. I'll come back later on today." I managed to go around and I was one of the first electricians there. It was quite funny because you rock up and then the guy's like, "There's a fire. There's smoke everywhere." I was sleeping in the shed and I fell asleep and I woke up and there was smoke around me.
I burnt my switchboard and the switchboard was on the outside. The power mains run through the top of the shed and the power had all been burnt out. He had no power for the rest of his house and he almost died. I can understand while he was quite shocked. and scared and bit like in fight or flight.
This guy then basically said, "Yes, I trust you. You do the job." I was like, "Great. I'm going to go away, get some tools, not tools, get some equipment and materials I need, the cable to run from the mains of the house and all this stuff." I went away and came back. During that time, a couple of electricians came up. He sent them away and then I came back and more electricians came up.
He's like, "Yeah, this guy called me." He told me 10, 20 electricians just to get somebody to show up. He was really panicking. What was the one thing in this situation that would have saved his life? His life was saved. What was the one thing that may have stopped his shed from basically burning to the ground and almost burning his house down?
If he had had a smoke alarm in his shed where he fell asleep, it was like a hangout, a games room. I don't know, whatever you want. He fell asleep out there. If he had a smoke alarm, it didn't have any actually installed in his house. If he had a smoke alarm, it would have woken him up a lot sooner and maybe he could put the fire out.
If he also had a fire extinguisher, he could have run and grabbed that and put it out himself and saved himself a whole lot of drama, a whole lot of stress. You have to talk to the insurance and all that type of stuff. The point being is you want to share a story that's relatable, that's actually happened, you don't want to lie, that happened to me. Then you want a solution. What is the solution that you're going to offer the customer or where do you want them to go?
You could be like, "Hey, this has happened to me. This has happened to my customers. I don't want it to happen to you." If you click the link below, this will take you to find out more. Click the link below to find out more. I'll click the link below and I'll show you what you need to do to get a smoke alarm installed in your house or whatever the thing is.
What is the next action? You want them to click the link below. To go to your page where if you've been listening to me, this is a sales funnel where you could have a smoke alarm. In the previous episode, I talked about actually creating offer around a smoke alarm. If you start saying this is where it's piecing together, hopefully it makes sense.
With that guys, I'll sum it up. In summary, you want to have a shocking headline. You want to shock them. You want to share a story. You want to provide a solution.
What's the next step? There are the three things you need to consider when you're doing a video, a blog, a whatever. When you're sharing something, you want to be able to follow that basic guideline as a structure. I hope that helps. If you have any questions, please let me know.
