Hey guys, James Rest here from Marketing Secrets for Electricians and today we're talking about traffic and eyeballs for your electrical business. So, here's what I hear a lot. How do normal electricians like us, who are properly trained and licensed, who are not willing to cheat and take shortcuts, and who are wanting to own a successful electrical business. How do we compete against the big guy? Every electrician wants traffic to their website.
However, to get it, what do you need to do? In my opinion, everything rests on doing this one particular thing. They've done to go the distance considering most businesses fail in between the first and the fifth years of business. So, they've got some great insight there. You can go to MarketingSecretsForElectricians.com to check that out.
Also working hard on creating some more content for you guys to help you with your electrical business. If you've got questions, answers, I'm doing live training in the Facebook group Marketing Secrets for Electricians. You can jump in there. Ask some questions or if you want to go over a particular topic for your business, please let me know. I plan on doing about one session per week.
That's all I've got room for. It's free for now and yeah, if you want to get something done in your business in regards to marketing, jump in, let me know, let's do it. Now, back to traffic. How do you get it? Well, in all honesty, you need to put down your screwdriver, pliers, multimeter, whatever you got, whatever you're working on and take a step back from the job.
for a minute. And once you've done that, pull out your phone, take it out of your pocket. Guess what you do? You take a photo of the job, the house, your workmanship, the van, even hit record and say something like this. Hey guys, James Rest here from My Electrical.
Today I'm working in New York with, say, Bob, and we're installing some smart wiring so Bob can control his home from anywhere in the world. Hey, it's some cool tech. If you would like something like this, if you want to see what smart wiring would do for your home, how it could save you time, comment smart wiring below in the comments and I will send you our free five step guide on how to have a smarter home. And that's it. That took less than 30 seconds.
And guess what? You would have just created some content that is telling potential customers that one, your electrician in the New York area, two, your part of your work is installing smart wiring free. They can get a free gift from you just as easily as commenting on the video that they've seen. I would like even when I'm when I'm at the job, I would even ask the customer, hey, could I get a quick testimony from you? And you could also post that up.
Now, imagine if you did this for at least one job a day, some quick maths on that. There are 52 weeks in the year, five working days in a week. So that is 260 bits of content that people could use to evaluate your business before they contact you. And this is actually the trend, guys, like most most people nowadays will search Facebook or search the Web for an online review or information on your service before they make that commitment to purchase from you. With that said, let's compare two websites, one that has been doing this content marketing for and has two hundred and sixty bits of content that includes all sorts of jobs, people, locations around the town that they area the area that they are.
And the other one just has a simple list of something like this, commercial domestic build, fault finding, lighting upgrades, fuse boards, rewires, emergency call out, swimming pools, garden lights, bullet tins, projects. Data installations, I literally guys pulled this from the I typed in a suburb and electrician and pulled this from the ad like the Google ad that they had. And that's the services they offer. That's all the kind of information they gave me about their services. There's no videos, no anything that was like, OK, so now you've got these two websites, one with lots of content, lots of videos enough to engage and learn from what this company is about.
It has a few lines of the services that they provide. Tell me, who would you choose? The one with all the content or the one with a few lines? Also on that, what do you or which one do you think will get found on Google? Google's local search, right?
It's becoming or is very popular. So you essentially type in your suburb and the electrician. And then all the local electricians would show up if they've done it correctly. You would show up with all your content there. In theory, the more content you can put out there for your electrical business, the more people will find and trust you, which equals at the end of the day, more work for you and more money in your pocket.
How easy is that? Well, apparently it's not that easy. There is a barrier between the experienced electrician who knows how to do the job and the marketing electrician who needs to start producing content for their company. My question to you is which one do you want to be? I've had a lot of people say that they don't do this online stuff as they have plenty of work and basically rely heavily on referral work from their customer base, which is like great.
I highly encourage that. However, it's kind of like my question is how many hours in a day can you work or maybe how many hours a day do you want to spend working in your business versus how many hours a day could or can your content work for you? There are many companies that can make millions of dollars or that are making millions of dollars a year. Get this right with only one sales guy. This is crazy.
And electricians are missing out. And I want to help you guys alter this so you can have a successful business and a good marketing campaign that brings in loads of work for you guys. And you don't have to always be the one going out there hunting it down. Wouldn't that be cool? I personally think the real reason is we're afraid of the camera and putting ourselves out there, or at least that's what it was for me.
What will people think at the end of the day? Who cares? It's none of our business. What people think of us. We live in a world where we have basically been taught to judge everything.
If something isn't perfect, well, we judge it. We judge them for it. However, it's more alarming. What's more alarming is we're very critical of ourselves. My nose is too big.
My hair is not perfect. I don't have enough wealth, friends or big enough muscles or that perfect body to get all the chicks, whatever the thing might be. It doesn't actually matter. It's more of this, our minds being critical of us. And I'm basically here to tell you it doesn't matter for the mind.
There's always going to be a gap between where you are, right now in your life and where you think you should be. Now, one of the things I love about business so much is that it kind of causes us to grow and become a man. It's kind of like what the Aborigines used to do. And some might still very well do this. It's something called a walkabout where a kid is basically sent out into the wild and must fend for themselves.
And after doing this for, I don't know how long it is, but after that, they survive and they pass and they're initiated into manhood. This is something that society, like today in society, there's a lack of, there's no initiation into manhood. However, I look at it as business is like this for us. It's something that gets us out of our comfort zone. I was a shy kid in school.
I was, I got the award for choir. It's like the quietest kid in camp. Like they got me up and gave me a little certificate. Like, so that's like how I was as a child. And now in business, it's caused me to grow into the man or the person that, that's, you know, can, can achieve the things I want to do.
Otherwise I'm stuck being that child. So my question is to you, what do you need to do? Where do you need to grow in order to have a thriving, successful electrical business? Well, in my opinion, it all, all starts with getting you and your business out into the world by producing some content. Now, ideally that content is like amazing and everyone shares it and you know, you get a thousand million views, whatever it may be.
However, that's like, let's be realistic. It's not going to be the case. Well, it'd be awesome as it was, but it's not going to be the case on your first time around. You need practice. You need to do it.
over and over and over and over again until you get really, really good at it that you no longer suck at it. You're actually like really good. However, that's not going to be the first time. And we're going to look at, look into a bit later on. I'm going to share how you can help yourself grow in this content area to help your business.
For now, I just want to touch on the different forms of content that are out there. So yeah, so the most valuable kind of content is video and people we're going nuts. Society is consuming video, like crazy. YouTube is growing. Facebook, like it has like, I think 80% of its advertising space or 70 some high amount is, is set for, um, is set for video.
Whereas if you use texts, it's only like 20%. You know, so there's a huge allocation to video because that's the way people want to consume. Then the next is audio for ease of use. You can walk the dog. You can do something and listen to the audio.
So you can be listening to this podcast now and you can be driving. You can be working on the job, whatever it may be. And then last is text based content, which is like your blogs and just some posts on Facebook, whatever it may be. It's like, you have to be there and reading it and let's face it. With that said, I think I've talked enough and it's time to take some action.
I'm all big on like talking, learning, uh, but society, we're so big on consuming information that we consume so much that we don't take any action, which means we stay where we are. Uh, so I want to encourage you to take action. So start getting more traffic to your website and let's have a bit of fun with this. I've done, I've created a simple challenge called the electricians marketing challenge. And here's how it works.
One, what you need to do to produce is to produce one bit of content per day for the next seven days. However, you don't need, like if you want to continue, you don't need to stop at seven days. You can go 14 days. Like me personally, I want to go for, my goal is to go for 365 days. So I want to produce a bit of content.
For a year. That's my target. It doesn't have to be yours. You might. I just want to get you guys started with one bit of content for what set the next seven days.
Step two, with that bit of content that you're, you're going to do, grab the URL. It can be like, so you can do a blog, you can do a video, you can do an audio. Like it, it, it's not the concern. The main thing is you produce the content, grab that URL and go to marketing secrets for electricians. Go to the Facebook page.
And on there, I've got a, a post where you can paste that URL and let everyone know, Hey, I'm doing this. This challenge. Yeah. So we're doing this together and everyone can say, Hey, this is it. This is, this is the bit of content I did for the day.
And we can track that step three. Once you've completed the challenge, they've done seven days of content in a row. You need to do it in a row. You've done six days and miss one and then do another one. That's like restarting.
So I want seven days. In a row because that helps you build the habit. Once you've done that though, comment and tag me in, in the post and let me know what reward you want. I'm not saying you're going to get the, get it, but Hey, just let me know what you want and we'll see what happens. Who knows?
Um, the main thing is, and this is in my opinion, this is the, the reward in itself is you building the habit on how to build content. And if you do it for seven days, that's the starting point. If you can go for longer, great. You in that, you know, it gets the ball moving for you to create content, which is going to get you more customers. Um, step four is what you've got is the most important bit.
Uh, following all the work is the review and everything I do personally, I like to review so I can learn from it. So with the bits of content that you produce, how did you do? What did you like about it? What didn't you like about it? What did you struggle with?
What could you do better? Let's talk about this. I want to start the conversation so we can all grow and learn and start making content. And I guarantee, well, we can't really guarantee, but anyway, um, disclaimer results may vary. Uh, I get, you're going to, if you do, if you produce content for a year, your life will be different than it is now.
Hey, you're going to change. You're going to get so much better, but the connections, the customers that are going to see that content, you don't know where it will take you. With that said, guys, good luck on doing the challenge and I will talk to you soon. Uh, we're interviewing these electrical contractors, getting the gems of knowledge and what they've learned over the course of time that they've run their business to get it to that point. We're not only going to cover how they got there, but what, what pitfalls they ran into along the way.
So you don't have to go through them yourself and you can go straight to ideally having that success or implementing things straight away that lead to your business growing a lot faster than it otherwise would have. So if you're interested in getting and listening to this video series course, you can go to marketingsecretsforelectrician.com and I'll see you there.
