Hey, guys, James West here, Marketing Secrets for Electricians. And today I'm sharing with you a Facebook Live I did not too long ago about growth hacking your electrical business and how you can take advantage of this simple technique that will create a viral loop in your business, growing it maybe quicker and faster than you thought possible with minimal effort and money involved from your own. So it's quite exciting. Following that, I've got a special giveaway at the end. So enjoy.
So here's what I hear a lot. How do normal electricians like us who are properly trained and licensed, who are not willing to cheat and take shortcuts and who are wanting to own a successful electrical business? How do we compete against the big guys who own the market share or the guys that charge peanuts for an electrical job? On top of that, we want to employ the best electricians so we can get off the tools and have plenty of time for other areas of life. That's the question.
Join me and follow along as we search for the answers. My name is James West and welcome to Marketing Secrets for Electricians. I use a growth hacking strategy where they're like at the end of they create the free email software, Hotmail, and then at the end of every email that I would send it would have, "Hey, sign up for your free email account." And this created a growth strategy that was more effective than the advertising dollars they sent because I was sending to friends and friends would then sign up to the email service. So that is really effective strategy, especially when you don't have a big budget. I'm going to give you an update on what I've been doing.
So I've been testing and running some Facebook ads for fine electricians. Now, what I found was I spent about 10 bucks and then they decided to shut me down. So they restricted and blocked my account. So I'm in the process now of trying to unblock the account so I can continue to test and run ads. Now, why they blocked it is completely up to them.
They don't really give you much information. They just don't like how you're running your ads. But anyway, so from the results, what I was able to get from this, the $10 I was able to spend, what I was doing was adding. So I do a video like this Facebook Live saying, "Hey, this is the thing." And you teach something of value and then you boost that post. So you might spend five bucks boosting it to an audience that you pick and see how effective that is.
Now, what I found was I got one lead. So the lead is someone who went to fine electricians and they opted in and said, "Hey, I've got a job and it was good at performing games." So I'm in the process of helping them find a electrician. So that's great. It worked. I got a lead.
It was $10 kind of because I'm still testing this out. Then the other thing was I got five interactions and five shares. So what were the interactions? That was on the ad I was testing. If people wanted to give away, I was like, "Hey, do you want free electrical work?
If so, what work do you want done and put your name in the comment box?" Put your work in the comments below and if I get enough people, then I'll essentially be looking at giving away some free electrical work. Now, why would I give away free? I'll explain later on, but the concept there was I got five people was like, "Hey, I want electrical work done and here's what I want done." So I created interest and then there's also five people that shared it. So this is where you start creating a viral loop. Now, of those five people, one was an electrician, was like, "No, thanks," which is fair enough.
You don't need any electrician to help you if you can already do the job. But the proof of concept is there. It works. It was costing essentially $2 per interaction or $10 for an actual lead unless you count the ones that told me that they wanted some electrical work done. So here's the benefit.
They were qualifying themselves for saying, "Hey, I need electrician and I have electrical work." Yes, this is a free thing, but they're putting their hand up like they're identifying them as the customer I would like to serve without them actually putting any money on the table. And that also helps what Facebook can do is re-target people that interact. So it's like, "Oh, these people are more likely to be interested and your ad spend will essentially get cheaper." Now, do you know what you're paying per client acquisition? So what is it costing you to acquire a customer? In Shark Tank, they ask the question, "What's the cost for you to acquire a customer?" Do you know your number in your electrical business?
If not, I suggest you try and figure that out, work it out. What is the price you're paying per customer? Now, give you an example of what I used to pay when I was full-time on electrical business. So when I was running my business, I was paying roughly anywhere from $20 to $100 per lead to get the client's details. So what that was, so the franchise I was part of, you were paying between $20 and $30 for the lead.
There was also like quote pages. So these are pages which like host, like high pages is one of them. They host these big networks of trades and they're like, "Hey, you want three free quotes, put your information here." And they send out to three electricians. So the negative side of that is, or positive and negative, that for every lead that they get, they send to at least three electricians. So every electrician that gets that lead pays $20 or $30, whatever the price is.
So they're making at least say $60 to $90 for that one customer, putting that in. Now, the negative side of it, one company that was doing it a while back was called Quotify and they actually went out of business and this was run by like Telstra. It was run by a big company or it was backed by Telstra, but they couldn't make it work because what happened was if I send to three electricians, two electricians are going to miss out and only one wins and yet the other two paid. So as you would expect, the electrician started getting pissed off. It's like, "I'm paying you money.
I'm paying you $20, $30 and I'm not winning any work. So why should I keep using your service?" Now I get that and it's quite challenging. But if you look at Google, Google Fix, I was paying $20 per click for my area. So anyone that would come see my ad when you type in electrician, they would see my ad, they'll click it. That will cost me about $20 per click.
That means I've paid Google 20. The customer has landed on my page, but I have not actually got any contact details from them. I won't see them again unless they put in their email or call me. And so I was paying up to $100 and getting one lead. So five clicks, one lead.
That's quite an expensive way to go about marketing. Now what we're going to look at in a minute is a diagram of a giveaway funnel where you can use a simple giveaway to grow your business effectively and bring your lead acquisition costs down to almost nothing. I've been working or talking with someone on this, not in the electrical trade, but in a different business altogether. Getting it down to like 17 cents per lead that they were generating. And then from those leads, so that's like top of your funnel, those leads that you're generating who are part of the contest, you can then warm them up so you can start talking and selling them other things.
And once you do this, you start then making money over the longterm. And this is where they have gone from like nothing to like $10,000 a month in three, six months, I think you were saying. So it's quite, it can be quite, quite an effective strategy. And as you can see from what I was saying with the cost that you're paying these quote companies or even Facebook, not Facebook, Google for the cost to acquire a customer. If you don't know this cost as well, you really need to work it out.
But if I paid $10 and I got essentially four people who wanted electrical work, one who actually gave me their thing and said, yes, I want you and I'm helping them find an electrician. Now you'll, you'll see that like, okay, $10 actually got me quite a bit of bang for your buck. So you've got a bit more, a bit more reach for what you're paying rather than just paying $20 per lead. So here's the advantage of using Facebook live, using these growth strategies that we're going to go through here. So the giveaway funnel looks something like this.
However, you're not going to be able to see this if you're listening to this on the podcast. So I'm going to explain this also. What's going on here is we have the top of the funnel where you're going to get your traffic from. So your customers, your eyeballs, whatever you want to call it, you've got on the left, you've got ads. And on the next step, you've got a list ads are essentially Facebook, Google, like wherever you're going to pay to get your ad put in front.
This would also be offline, but I'm just going to focus on online. I have the list now I've gone through what a list is in a previous episode, but essentially this is a list of customers that you have already the email or phone numbers of that you can send out a message and say, Hey, go check out this thing that I'm offering you. So these are the two traffic sources we're going to be using. And then following that, once you send out, so you're going to send out a message as in front of your ads and your list. Click through will come to your giveaway offer.
And what we're going to do is give away, I would say roughly $200 worth of electrical work. I've thought of trying to be specific on what we give away. For example, if you're an air con electrician, maybe you want to focus on that or, you know, tailor it to the type of work. But in general, I think a hundred more $200 is like, okay, cool. This is worth me taking the.
Couple minutes to go through and put my data. In and give you information about my work or the electrical work that I've got. So it's enough to incentivize people to actually take the time to go through the thing. 200 is quite a bit of money. So that being said, once they opt in, then you've got the share page, which is they're going to learn on this page and you're going to go, Oh, well, thank you for opting in.
And I've got your details. You're you've got one ticket into the draw for this competition. More tickets, you can share this link and we'll give them a share link that they can then post on Facebook or social media, wherever they hang out with their friends. They can give that to them. And if someone signs up under that link, it gets accredited to them and they get like an extra ticket in the giveaway.
So they shared it with 10 people, they could get an extra 10 tickets, which increases their chances of winning the $200 electrical thing. Now, the average person knows at least two people. Or is connected with two people that if they share something, they're going to take action. So the theory is here and here is how the magic works. We create a viral loop and it's if one person comes in, they share it with at least, you know, two people that also opt in, then one person in and then they bring two more people in.
So then you've got two more people bringing in two more people. So it's like doubles and doubles and doubles and doubles and doubles. And you do that enough and you have a viral loop that keeps growing. And it takes on a life of its own. Now you could do this every month, every three months, you could do different offers.
I would suggest testing different things. This is the one I'm thinking of testing. However, if you wanted to do it yourself, you could test whatever you want to see what your audience resonates with now. I'm going to give you $200 of free ad spend that we can work together. So I want to work with you.
I want to partner up. I'm going to spend $200 in ads. You can spend $200 on the electrical work to give the customer. So it's like pass it forward. Yeah.
It's a good or interesting movie where you pass pass it on. So I'm giving you 200. You give them 200 and they give us lots of leads for your business. That's a simple concept. Now, if you want to be a part of that, I don't know how many I'm going to take on.
I don't know. I'm not worried about what area we do this in because this effect, this strategy can work in any area. And this is one strategy of many that I'm going to be testing out. But if you want to be or you're interested in this, you can comment on the post here or you can go to marketing electrician.com and they've got the giveaway button.
